The City, Old and New
What I see and feel in the City of London now, is difficult to reconcile with my place-identity. Has London changed so much, or are my memories misleading me? This project is an investigation into how much My London has really changed in the 25 or so years since I was a regular commuter into the City.
The visual result of the project is a collection of paired photographs of built infrastructure in close proximity to each other. Each pair represents the old and the new; old on the left and new on the right.
In practice, the reality I found and photographed was not binary. Sometimes the new is truly a new development, built on the ashes of a demolished part of the City’s history. Sometimes an existing building has been extensively changed, either internally or externally. An old, preserved exterior may conceal recent, modern renovations. Often, the old was only old relative to its neighbours, or was an untended and ill-maintained corner in a glossy neighbourhood.
The City of London is changing less than I thought. Profit and conservation go hand in hand
